1. Introduction

The monetary discourse of the past two decades has produced a striking proliferation of proposals — mutual credit networks revived from the 1930s, blockchain-native cryptocurrencies, complementary currencies anchored to bioregional ecological capacity, commitment pools encoding promises rather than balances, contribution-credit schemes designed to abolish accumulation, capped-return investment vehicles, retroactive public goods funding, antirival tokens that gain value with use. These proposals do not share a common vocabulary and frequently misclassify one another.

This essay is a taxonomy. It does not argue for any single monetary mechanism. It argues instead for a structural-diversity-and-resilience thesis: that monetary monocultures are structurally fragile, and that a thoughtful metamodern position would articulate the dimensions along which monetary architectures actually differ, so that combinations of mechanisms can be designed into a structurally resilient monetary ecology.

The structural-diversity-and-resilience thesis belongs to Bernard Lietaer and collaborators, who applied Ulanowicz and Goerner's work on complex flow networks to monetary systems: any sustainable complex flow network must balance efficiency against resilience; monocultures are highly efficient but collapse-prone. What this taxonomy adds is a more granular operationalization — seven dimensions (three architectural, three operational, four anthropological) rather than four functional layers.

The framing is metamodern in a specific sense. Modernity treats deviation from bank-issued credit money as fringe. Postmodernity proposes totalizing replacement. Neither takes the structural-fragility argument seriously: that any single architecture, however well-designed, is brittle precisely because it is single. The metamodern position is that a thoughtful monetary architecture is necessarily plural.

2. Methodology

The taxonomy is organized into three grids: architecture (what the mechanism is as a designed object), operation (how it works in practice), and anthropological assumptions (what it implicitly assumes about human beings). The same row ordering — reference points first, then alphabetized mechanism rows — lets you trace any architecture vertically or read horizontally along any dimension.

Grid 1 — Architecture

Grid 2 — Operation

Grid 3 — Anthropological assumptions

Reading conventions

Cells use compressed prose rather than discrete category labels. The taxonomy uses mechanism-not-brand discipline — each row names a class of pattern, with named projects mentioned only as prototypes. Sardex is the prototype for mutual credit clearing; the row is "mutual credit clearing," not "Sardex."
